What We Do:

In 1905 Peter Bart emigrated from a small island off the coast of Greece. He promptly moved to Lawrence, MA where he had family to help get him settled. A mutual friend was able to find Peter a job at the local candy factory. Peter honed his skills making a wide variety of chocolates and candies. He moved to Concord, NH several years later to find a place for his new family to call their own. In 1927, Peter opened what we all know today as the Granite State Candy Shoppe.

Peter started out small, making a limited number of hard candies and chocolates. He hired a chocolate hand dipper to coat the delicious chocolate centers and candies he created each day in his kitchen. Peter loved to make candies with almost any variety of nuts. He would only use freshly cooked nuts in his chocolates and candies. His customers loved his nut candies so much they asked him if they could start to purchase cooked nuts in addition to his fine confections. This is how the long held tradition of providing the finest, fresh roasted nuts anywhere began.

In 1957, Peter retired leaving the business to his son’s George and Costa. They, as a team continued the fine tradition of producing high quality chocolates, candies and roasted nuts in the spirit of their father. Not much has changed at the Granite State Candy Shoppe since Peter opened shop in 1927. All of Peter’s original candy Recipes are still used today alongside some new creations unique to our shop. We take pride in our long family tradition and hope that you enjoy eating our candies as much as we enjoy making them.
