Family Owned Since 1911 - Four Generations of Proud Sales and Service
In November of 1911, Benson Auto Co., Inc. was founded as the brainchild of Harold A. Benson, and Ray Benson, brothers, and Roy Benson, a cousin. All of whom came from Vermont. In 1915 they were awarded the Chevrolet franchise and drove their first chevrolet car from New York City (where the factory was located) in two days.
Ray left the concern and moved back to Vermont a few days later, while Ray and Harold continued as partners. The partnership continued until Harold's died in 1957.
With Harolds two sons, Earl H. and Ervin E. Benson at the helm, the dealership continued to grow.On April 1,1958 Earl and Ervin made the declaration "As of today, we have become the new owners of Benson Auto Co., Inc. We will carry on the business at the same location with the same experienced personnel. We look forward to meeting and serving all of the customers, old and new. We will go right on offering you the best in new and used cars, and the best mechanical service." They stood until the day they retired.
It became apparent in 1970 that the company had out grown its building. Plans for a new complex were set. The new building would sand in the same place as the original. On Dec 16, 1970 the new complex was dedicated and the business continued to florish.
Earl retired and left his responsibilities to his son Jack E. Benson in April 1987. Until Ervin's retirement in April,1993, he and Jack directed the dealership onward.
The dealership continues to florish, under Jack's guidance. Additionaly to the top service department, a full body shop was created. The south adjacent property was purchased in 1994 and the housing was added for new and used vehicles. A new body shop was built to provide better service and more room in 1998, including a new state of the art down draft paint spray booth. More land on the south end of the dealership was purchased in 1999 and is now being used to house even more automobiles.
Jack's son, Corey Benson, has now partnered with Jack in owning and operating Benson Auto as the General Manager. Corey has lead the evolution of the dealership but also established a used car outlet, located on Exit 20 in Tilton.
